About Fun Gal
(Dr. Haley Burrill)
Haley is an ecologist, microbiologist, and mycologist (in addition to many other things). She went to UC Santa Cruz for her bachelors in Plant Science, where she did undergraduate research on “Sudden oak death” pathogen Phytophthora ramorum with Dr. Greg Gilbert in the mixed evergreen forest. She spent a year in Utah and Nevada working as a conservation field technician and botany technician before starting graduate school at the University of Kansas.
She received her masters in 2020 and stayed to earn her PhD in 2023. At KU she studied the plant microbiome, below ground in the soil and roots as well as above ground on the leaves. She found evidence for the role of native plant pathogens in mediating plant community diversity and promoting biodiversity. During this time, she was also co-president of the KU Community Garden, which grew produce for students and local food banks.
After graduating in 2023 she moved to Eugene for a postdoctoral research position with Dr. Bitty Roy at UO, where she worked on the CliMush project. In fall 2024 Haley revived the UO Mycology course and lab, having last been taught in 2021 by Dr. Jeff Stone. Since UO has not agreed to continue offering the course, Haley is seeking new ways to teach, sharing her knowledge and skillset.
These offerings are ever-evolving and Haley is open to inquiries that exceed the bounds of what is listed here at this time. Please reach out your mycelia to connect!
